Overview
After the Workshop on
Optical Read-out Technologies hosted by KTH in Stockholm,
there was a first informal meeting of the institutes responsible
for the front-end digital links of the ATLAS liquid argon calorimeter.
Summary
- Link Architecture
Prompted by the apparent confusion during the last Larg electronics
meeting it was agreed that more information about the sudden emergence
of two way (emitter and receiver on detector) links into the
front-end link forum was needed.
ACTION : Bernard to mail everyone with full details of the current
situation.
- CORE-7 Estimates
As requested by Jacques Colas our groups are required to provide an
updated estimate of the CORE-7 element for Larg links.
ACTION : Bernard to circulate his initial estimate for discussion.
- Radiation Tests
The need for thorough radiation testing was clearly identified.
Marie Laure has already volunteered to survey ATLAS opto-irradiation
needs during Friday's ATLAS opto-workshop.
There was also some
discussion of the possibility of doing parasitic tests. Mark would,
for example, look into the possibility of obtaining lens samples
from ST-housed VCSEL's for irradiation studies. Marie-Laure explained
that there would be a several day period available next Spring for
neutron irradiations at SARA.
- Summary of Interests
A quick survey of the current interests of each group was performed :
- CPPM
Serial solutions based on G-link and parallel solutions
probably based on Optobus.
- ISN
The Amphenol array connector
- KTH
Honeywell and Mitel ST-housed (for example) VCSEL's
- SMU
Honeywell transceiver units
All groups wanted to irradiate their components too !
- Co-ordination Issues
- Co-ordinator
Given the geographical separation between the groups, the
need for an overall co-ordinator was identified. This person
would become the single point of contact for Larg link activities
in order to reduce communication problems. The person
would also be responsible for the distribution of information
(no filtering !) between groups, maintaining mailing lists / WWW pages
etc.
ACTION : Mark was nominated for this position - he accepted.
The following points have been added after the meeting (M.P.) :
- New mailing lists
All institutes are
encouraged to provide up to date mailing lists for the Larg
digital links project as soon as possible. These people
will also receive mail from the soon to be created `ATLAS-opto'
mailing list.
- WWW pages
A dedicated Larg links WWW pages will be created by Mark
- Quotations etc.
The question of quotations arose during the meeting.
Mark suggests that everyone with a
relevant quotation faxes him a copy for the central file. Summaries
(no cost details) could be posted on the WWW (password protected, if
necessary).
- Next Meeting
For the moment, Larg digital links meetings will take place
on Wednesday mornings during Larg weeks in the space historically
taken by the analogue links meeting. Analogue issues will continue
to be discussed as long as considered useful.
