Production of orbital and radial excitations of charmed mesons in jets
Production of orbital and radial excitations of charmed mesons in jet
Present situation
DELPHI has presented several preliminary results on the production of orbital
excitations of charmed mesons in c and b jets:
at HEP95
in Brussels and
at HEP98 in Vancouver.
A preliminary result on a first evidence for radial excitations was also
shown in
Vancouver .
Since then, this last result has been
published
in Phys. Lett. B426 (1998) 231 but measurements from OPAL
and CLEO have not confirmed the signal.
What remains to be done
Complete the analysis and publish measurements on the production of
narrow (and possibly broad) charm orbitally excited states in c and b jets.
These rates, measured in charm jets, are necessary input to understand
hadronisation properties of heavy quarks.
Redo the analysis searching for D radial excitations and eventually enlarge the
search to other decay final states. It maybe sufficient to have another
independent analysis of the D* pi+ pi- channel if we are convinced that
one expects that these states are quite broad and thus not observable.
Tools and contact-persons
The analysis can use tagged samples of exclusively reconstructed
D0, D+, D*+ candidates and benefits from a lot of existing tools.
