STATUS OF THE FOUR EXPERIMENTS AND OF THE LHWG November 24, 2003 ---------------------------------------------- DISCUSSION BY PHYSICS ITEM -------------------------- (0) STANDARD MODEL HIGGS ... Done. -------------------- ALEPH final 209 PL B526 (2002) 191 DELPHI final 209 CERN-EP/2003-008 -> EPJ C L3 final 209 PL B517 (2001) 319 OPAL final 209 CERN-EP/2002-059 -> EPJ C LHWG Final paper PL B565 (2003) 61 (1) MSSM ---- ALEPH: Final publication: PL B526 (2002) 191. The inputs delivered to the LHWG correspond to this publication DELPHI: The currently submitted publication (CERN-EP/2003-008 -> EPJ C) is not considered final for the MSSM. A new paper is being prepared which uses the new scan data bases, with improved theoretical calculations and new "benchmarks" (see below) including some with CP-violation. On the analysis side, the new paper will use additional, flavour-independent, channels to improve the sensitivity in parts of the parameter space. Also, the low-mass region (mA < 12 GeV) will be covered using existing analyses applied to LEP1 data (it will however not cover completely down to zero mass). While other experiments and the LHWG is using "random" scan data base, DELPHI is using "fixed grid" ones (where the parameter values are ordered). These data bases are available (have been produced by Alex Read on the "Northern Grid"). Work on the final DELPHI paper on MSSM interpretations is progressing ... Time scale ? The final and complete inputs to the LHWG are being prepared (Vanina, Alex) ... When ? L3: Final publication: PL B545 (2002) 30. The region mA<10 GeV is not considered. The final inputs corresponding to this publication have been delivered but these do not contain, e.g., the flavour-independent search channels (see: L3 Note 2860, June 2003). Therefore, un update of the inputs will be done (Alexei Raspereza) ... Time scale ? OPAL: Final paper in preparation. The "prototype" for this paper is OPAL PN524 (July 2003). Besides the classical three CP conserving benchmark scans (no-mix, mh-max and large-mu) this paper will contain a number of new benchmarks which are o favoured by the (g-2)_mu and b->s gamma measurements o are difficult for LHC o CP violating scenarios. The corresponding scan data bases (Arnulf Quadt, "random grid") are available . The global MSSM analysis also includes decay-mode independent search (CERN-EP/2002-032) and flavour-independent search (CERN-EP/2003-... -> PL B), Yukawa searches at LEP1 (EPJ C23 (2002) 397), and the dedicated low-mA search (CERN-EP/2002-058 -> EPJ C). The paper is in the ED-board. The scans are being rerun NOW using the new scan data bases. The paper should be submitted before Christmas. LHWG: Preliminary combination, using data up to 209 GeV, LHWG Note 2001-04. The new scan data bases ("random grid") ARE AVAILABLE For the CPC scenarios, see Arnulf Quadt's first presentation /afs/cern.ch/user/q/quadt/public/lhwg_14042003.pdf For the CPV scenarios, see Philip Bechtle's presentation /afs/cern.ch/phys/lep/lephiggs/www/bechtle_MSSM_CPviol.ps.gz. See also the OPAL PN-524 for both. These scan data bases are done for two theoretically up-to-date approaches for which detailed comparisons have been done. o FEYNHIGGS ... two-loop diagrammatic approach (Heinemeyer, Hollok, Weiglein, hep-ph/0212037) o SUBHPOLE ... one-loop renorm.-group improved For CPC: Carena, Quiros, Wagner, Mrenna ... e.g. Phys. Rev. D60 (1999) 075010 For CPV: CPH code Carena, Ellis, Pilaftsis, Phys Lett. B495 (2000) 155 Latest version: CPH+ maintained by Pilaftsis. For the different benchmark models considered, see the proposal of Crena, Heinemeyer, Wagner, Weiglein, hep-ph/0202167. Technical combinations have started by Alex using the "Northern Grid" and by Tom Junk. We plan for a paper containing the final combined LEP results on the old and new, CPC and CPV benchmark models. The paper will concentrate on o describing the theoretical framework and the scan data bases o the combination procedure (with Ref. to the SM paper) o a summary of the experiment inputs with a CATALOG OF THE SEARCHES CONTRIBUTING (by experiment, channels, range of LEP energies, luminosities, mass ranges where they are applicable, Ref. for details) o model-independent limits on topological cross sections o MSSM "benchmark" interpretations. A "general" MSSM scan ? - Andre Sopczak developing it for DELPHI. If successful, such an interpretation can also be included. The paper should contain no technical details from the four experiments for which the individual publications are referenced. A draft structure (+ part of the text) is available on http://lephiggs.web.cern.ch/LEPHIGGS/protected/ (MSSM paper draft) and will be continuously updated (Comments to PIK). The paper will be developed in parallel to the combination work such that a full draft be available as soon as the final LEP combined results are there. Alex has set up a web page to monitor the progress of the MSSM combination (similar to the one he had for the SM), accessible from the protected LHWG page http://lephiggs.web.cern.ch/LEPHIGGS/protected/all_lep/index.html Timescale for the MSSM paper ... ---------------------------- Full combined LEP results + full draft (LHWG-Note) by Moriond. Publication by Summer 2004. (2) CHARGED HIGGS ------------- ALEPH: Final paper, PL B543 (2002) 1 The inputs presently available correspond to this publication; they cover the mass range 60 GeV -> kin.limit and could be extended downwards to 45 GeV (Paul Colas) ... When? Pierre Lutz' comment: if extended downwards, the verification of the new inputs has to be done by ALEPH internally since there is no published "reference" to compare to. DELPHI: Final publication, CERN-EP/2003-064 -> EPJ (Sept 2003) It includes, besides the usual H+H- -> tntn, tncs, cscs channels, also H+H- -> AW*AW* and AW*tn. Limits are given separately with and without the AW*-related channels. Interpretation in 2HDM of types II and I. The corresponding inputs are being produced by Pierre Lutz. L3: Final publication: CERN-EP/2003-054 -> PLB (August 2003). The excess at mH=68 GeV in the cscs channel is still there, at the 2.5 sigma level. There is no intention to add AW* searches. Pablo Garcia-Abia is producing the final inputs NOW. OPAL: New and complete analysis almost finished including the AW*-related channels, 2HDM type II and type I interpretations. Final paper is foreseen for the end of the year. Delivery of inputs ... same time scale (Gabriella Pasztor) LHWG: Preliminary combination: 209 GeV, LHWG Note 2001-05 (only tntn, tncs and cscs final states). Final combination ... as soon as the final inputs from D,L,O become available. Pierre Lutz has started with technical combinations. The AW* channels from DELPHI and OPAL should be included. The CATALOG of the searches contributing to the combination (by experiment, channels, range of LEP energies, luminosities, mass ranges where they are applicable, Ref. for details) should be produced NOW. It would be useful to set up a web page (similar to the MSSM page), accessible from the protected LHWG page, to monitor the progress. The squeleton for the combined LEP paper is presented by Pierre Lutz (he will maintain the .tex for this publication). Timescale for the Charged Higgs paper ... ------------------------------------- Full combined LEP results + full draft (LHWG-Note) by Moriond. Publication by Summer 2004. (3) FERMIOPHOBIC (h->gamma gamma, WW*, ZZ*) --------------------------------------- ALEPH: Final paper on h-> gamma gamma, PL B544 (2002) 16. The inputs provided correspond to this publication (checked with Andre Tilquin). Work on h-> WW* (and ZZ* ?) is going on. (Report to ALEPH on Dec.4) DELPHI: DELPHI 2003-004 CONF 627 (March 2003) ... to become a paper soon. It includes Z(h->gamma gamma) and h(A->hZ, bb)(h->gamma gamma). Interpretation in 2HDM type I (fermiophobic). Exclusions of sin2(b-a) in the (mh,mA) projection. Plans for publication: will become CERN-EP in December 2003 Inputs: have been updated (Sofia Andringa 21.11.03). An analysis of h->WW* (and ZZ* ?) is progressing slowly. For when ? - Not before January '04. L3: Final paper on h-> gamma gamma, PL B534 (2002) 28. Final paper on h-> WW*, ZZ* (+gamma gamma) ... CERN-EP/2002-080 -> PL B, with a full fermiophobic interpretation. (Could be taken as a model for a LHWG paper.) Final inputs Delivered for h->gg. For WW*, ZZ* inputs ... (talk to Chris Tully and Jeremy Mans) OPAL: Final paper on h-> gamma gamma, PL B544 (2002) 44. The inputs available correspond to this publication. Analysis on h-> WW*, ZZ* has started; progress slow. LHWG: Preliminary combination: 209 GeV, LHWG Note 2002-02, for h->gamma gamma only. Options for the final LEP paper: Option (1): One could write up and publish NOW the combined LEP result on h -> gamma gamma (poor man's solution) Option (2): Depending on the intentions ant time scale of A, D, O on h->WW* search one could think of a more general combined fermiophobic LEP paper (see L3's CERN-EP/2002-080). It could also include DELPHI's result on e+e- -> (h->gamma gamma)A Time scale? (4) INVISIBLE HIGGS DECAYS ---------------------- ALEPH: Final paper, PL B526 (2002) 191 The inputs correspond to this publication (Marumi Kado). DELPHI: Final publication CERN-EP/2003-046 -> EPJ Includes also an interpretation in MSSM (a variant of the mh-max benchmark), providing exclusions in the low tanb-region (0.5 - 2). Final inputs delivered to the LHWG ? (Bill Murray) L3: L3 Note 2690 (July 2001) is the only document. It uses all data. Some "loose ends" to be tied up before the final publication (no name ... L3 looking for someone) S.M.: "Progresses are being made but timescales are still unclear. It does not appear hopeless to have some results in the next months. The final results may be somewhat different from what is in the Note." OPAL: Last journal publication: LEP1, PL B377 (1996) 273. Update with all LEP2 data: OPAL PN472 (2001) Analysis finished within weeks Publication foreseen by the end of 2003 Inputs can be provided soon (Koichi Nagai) LHWG Preliminary combination: 209 GeV, LHWG Note 2001-06. Final combination ... possibly towards the end of 2003 Bill Murray has started the technical work on combination but ... waiting for final inputs from L3 and OPAL. We foresee a separate short paper with upper bound on the HZ cross section (H-> inv), lower limit on mass ... (MSSM interpretation like DELPHI?) (5) FLAVOUR INDEPENDENT SEARCHES ---------------------------- ALEPH: Final paper, PL B544 (2002) 25 Includes h-> hadronic (bb,cc,gg) and also h-> tau+tau- limits on cross-sect x br.ratio. The inputs correspond to this publication (Pascal Gay). DELPHI: Paper in preparation. Draft: DELPHI 2003-005 CONF 628 including all data. Searches for hZ-> 2j(2j, E-miss, ee, mumu), and hA->(4jet or 3-jet) are included. Limits on cross-section. Limits on the cross section f(mh), f(mh,mA). Paper progressing ... by the end of 2003. Can the inputs be delivered? (Philip Bambade) (also relevant for the final MSSM combination !) L3: Final publication: CERN-EP/2003-069 Both hZ and hA channels. Limits on the hZZ and hAZ coulpings The inputs are ready; will be delivered within the next days (Alexei Raspereza) OPAL: Final publication: CERN-EP/2003- ... (waiting for a number) Only hZ channels. There is also: final pub., "Decay-mode independent", 209 GeV, CERN-EP/2002-032 -> EPJ C. Can the inputs be delivered? (Goetz Gaycken) LHWG: Preliminary combination: 209 GeV, LHWG Note 2001-07 Final combination ... (Philip Bambade, Pamela Ferrari) Publication ... possible options (a) Short paper on the hZZ coupling limit (hZ channels only) hAZ coupling limits -> 2HDM "scan" paper (see below) (b) Short paper on hZZ and hAZ coupling limits (hZ and hA channels) 2HDM paper contains only model interpretations. Option (b) seems more "natural". (6) 2HDM (type II) scan (mA, tanb, alpha) ------------------- OPAL: Publication, 189 GeV, EPJ C18 (2001) 425. Includes hZ and hA, using "b-tagged" and "fl.independent" searches. Update with all LEP data ... progressing (Pamela Ferrari) Paper expected by the end of this year. LHWG: Could be combined with similar search channels from all other experiments (No new inputs needed beyond the existing "b-tagged" and "fl.independent" ones). (Pamela Ferrari would do the combination) (7) Doubly charged Higgs -------------------- DELPHI: Final publication: 209 GeV, CERN-EP/2002-077 -> PL B Pair-production only. Inputs ... Guillermo Gomez. L3: Final publication: CERN-EP/2003-060 -> PLB (accepted) Pair-production and limit from Bhabha scattering via t-channel exchange (the mass limit reaches into the TeV range) Inputs ... Who? (Raw inputs can be provided by S.M.). OPAL: Final publication: PL B526 (2002) 221 ... Pair prod. only. Final publication: CERN-EP/2003-041 Single prod., (quoting also pair prod) and limit from Bhabha scattering. Inputs ... (Klaus Desch) LHWG: D, L, O combination possible. Inputs should be provided. The combined LEP limit from Bhabha scattering can be taken from or produced in collaboration with the LEP-EW group (Dimitri.Bourlikov@cern.ch). Mail from Dimitri (13.11.03): He has produced the limit for L3 and, within the EW working group, is doing the LEP combination on Bhabha scattering (diff. cross-section, ALO so far). He is planning to produce accepted to produce the combined LEP limit on the H++ mass. (8) Miscellenia (for completeness, not necessarily to be combined) ----------- (a) Yukawa processes ---------------- OPAL: Final, LEP1 data: EPJ C23 (2002) 397 (is used in the MSSM in the low-mass region) DELPHI: "Search for Neutral Higgs Bosons in Extended Models" DELPHI 20002-037-CONF-571 (July 2002) describing a combined search for hZ, hA and Yukawa processes in the 4b, 4b+jets, 6b, 2b2tau and 4tau final states. Results presented as mass-dependent bounds on model independent coupling factors, ... to be published ? ... can the inputs be delivered for the MSSM combination? (b) Search for anomalous Higgs couplings ------------------------------------ L3: journal publication: 189 GeV, PL B489 (2000) 102 (including H-gamma, HZ, He+e-, with H->bb, gamma-gamma, Z-gamma) Updated: L3 note 2774, to be submitted to CERN-EP and PLB by the end 2003 or Jan 2004. STRATEGY -------- We should aim at publishing separate papers with the final combined LEP results, at least on the following subjects ... (1) MSSM (a) CP-conserving: no-mix, mh-max, large-mu,scans, LHC-motivated scans (and a "general scan"?) (b) CP-violating: CPX benchmark (and variants) (2) Charged Higgs bosons: H+H- -> tntn, tncs, cscs, AW*AW*, AW*tn, interpretation in 2HDM of type II and type I. (3) Fermiophobic Higgs -> gamma gamma, WW*, ZZ* (4) Invisible Higgs decays -> limit on cross section (H-> inv), mass limit (5) Flavour and Decay-mode independent searches (a) model-independent bounds on hZZ and hAZ couplings (b) General 2HDM scan (6) Searches for doubly charged Higgs: pair-, single-prod (D,L,O) and limit from Bhabha scattering (A,D,L,O) The contributions from the four experiments will not always be "homogeneous" e.g.: in the fermiophobic sector probably not all experiments will contribute to H->WW*, ZZ*; e.g.: doubly charged Higgs ... D, L, O BUT THAT SHOULD NOT STOP US FROM COMBINING ! Technical combination work has started on (1) MSSM (Alex Read, Tom Junk, Ph. Bechtle for CPX) (2) Charged Higgs (Pierre Lutz) (3) Invisible Higgs (Bill Murray) (4) ??? NEXT TARGET DATES ----------------- FOR (1) MSSM and (2) Charged Higgs (... and maybe others ...) ... full combined LEP results, documented (LHWG-Note) ... by "Moriond 2004" ... final papers published ... by July 2004. The list of separate short publications MAY be followed by a comprehensive review for which we still have a pending offer from Eur.Phys.Journal C ... but that project seems very very remote. Will there still be interest? ... and people devoted to the task? MINIMAL MANPOWER REQUIRED ------------------------- Even if the inputs are delivered and "frozen", experience with the SM paper tells us that we need for each physics item at least one contact person from each experiment who will respond to questions and will also be part of the paper editing team. We also need at least one LHWG "combiner" for each item. Ideally we would also need an independent combiner to verify the results. "Contacts" ... by experiment and physics item ...
