The OPAL Silicon Microvertex Detector

Events as Seen by the Microvertex Detector

This event is a typical heavy quark decay seen in the middle of OPAL. Without the microvertex detector, it is difficult to distinguish the interaction point from the decay point. The exploded view from the microvertex detector cleanly distinguishes two decay vertices from the initial creation point of the Z0. The red spikes in the picture represent the signals seen in the detectors, while the blue lines represent the reconstruct paths of the particle. The exact nature of each particle exiting the detector is decided by detectors external to the microvertex detector.
