The OPAL Silicon Microvertex Detector

Future Upgrade Plans

For the operation of OPAL at the next phase of the accelerator, called LEPII, we plan to increase the size of the microvertex detector. We also plan to cover some gaps between ladders by using a pinwheel geometry in the cross section.

This Upgrade is needed because of the low expected event rates at LEPII, which will try to create W+ W- and Z0 pairs at a center of mass energy of almost 200 GeV. Every event will be rare and valuable, allowing a glimpse into an unprecedented energy regime.
