Glossary
Note: this page is in a preliminary form, we will
go to a more elaborate FAQ system in the future.
- CERN HTTPD
- This software is no longer supported. The CERN httpd ("http daemon")
was developed at the beginning of the Web. The software was put in the
public domain and later transferred to the W3
Consortium. The www.cern.ch server now runs Apache.
- Netscape questions
- See special FAQ
for questions from CERN users
- Proxy and caching service
- The http caching service was turned off on 1998.06.30, since there
is now a transparent caching router on the USA line from CERN. The proxy
service for http traffic is now restricted to some special machines.
- Search Engine
- CERN officially uses the InfoSeek engine. The Web Office runs a dedicated
machine for this service. This machine indexes all CERN servers. To find
information located at CERN, use only this engine. See also how to provide
search facilities to your own pages.
