Netscape 4.04 on UNIX platforms

WebOffice Documentation Using Netscape Navigator 4.04

General information

Since May 5th 1998, CERN default Web browser is Netscape 4.04.
This means that executing the command netscape on a CERN UNIX machine will start that version of the browser.
Netscape 2.02 will remain available to provide users with a lighter version of the browser in case they feel the resources required by the default version are too many.
Netscape 3.01 is still available but we are planning to drop this version in the next weeks.

To run a version different from the default one, enter:
netscape -version < version number >
where < version number > could be:
2.02 or light for Netscape 2.02,
3.01 or beta or gold for Netscape 3.01 .

On the UNIX machines here at CERN only the Navigator and the Messenger components of Netscape Communicator are supported.

Launching the netscape command will run a script (the wrapper) which defines some user's settings and force some defaults if the command is run for the first time.
To display the command line options available for the wrapper, please enter
netscape -help .

Contacts

We invite our users to contact:
for problems/questions related to the browser : www.support@cern.ch
for problems/questions related to the mail : mail.support@cern.ch

From the previous Netscape versions to Netscape 4.04

Please note that under Netscape 4.04 the preferences file is preferences.js and not preferences like in the previous versions. The two files have a different format and we strongly recommend users not to modify the preferences file by hand, but use the browser menu
Edit | Preferences
to
change their settings.
If you've been running a previous version of Netscape then your bookmarks file (bookmarks.html) will be recognized by Netscape 4.04.

FAQ

We collect a list of FAQ received by the WebOffice.
There you can find an answer for the most common problems/questions arose among the CERN users.

Remarks

We would like to inform our users that some of the problems listed above have been reported to the Netscape Technical Support which is supposed to give us some information and/or advises about them.
Unfortunately the feedback we had so far has been low and some of our requested haven't even been answered.

We are trying to do our best in order to fix the problems some users are facing but please understand that sometimes we don't get any support from Netscape and that this makes everything slower.
