Experimental Properties of Gluon and Quark Jets from a Point Source Gluon jets are identified in Z$^0$ decays as the particles in a hemisphere opposite to two tagged quark jets, corresponding to the definition of gluon jets in calculations. Quark jets are selected as the particles in hemispheres of tagged light quark (uds) events. For soft particles at large transverse momentum, the charged particle multiplicity ratio of gluon to quark jets is 2.29+-0.09(stat.)+-0.15(syst.), in agreement with the QCD prediction of about 2.25. Our gluon jet data allow a sensitive test of color reconnection. We test the model of color reconnection in the Ariadne Monte Carlo and find it to be disfavored.
