Purpose of this animation: to provide minimum info on how to accelerate particles/collide particles

Must be basic – not detail on the individual parts of the LHC itself (this is a different animation!)

Chapters of the animation:

  1. What is the overall goal? To make increase the energy of particles and make them hit each other at the right place at the right time – safely STEVE
    1. “Luminosity”
  2. SOURCE of particles SILVANO
    1. Hydrogen bottle
  3. Acceleration (linear/circular) SILVANO & ROLF
    1. -e.g. LINAC, SPS – possibly transforming from a linear acc. to a circular one b. bunching
  4. Guiding the particles DAVE
    1. dipoles for bending b. Horizontal/vertical Quadrupoles for focusing c. Squeezing for collisions (inner triplets) – maximize luminosity
  5. Bringing particles into collision
  6. Machine/environmental protection
    1. Collimators b. Beam & radiation monitors c. Beam dump CORINNE
  7. Accelerator complex
  8. Relativistic mass increase!

Some questions that should (if possible) be addressed in the animation

Particles/Protons

Q. where do the protons come from?

Q. but how do you get the protons from the hydrogen? etc.

Q. what do you mean by a "bunch" of protons?

Q. why don't the protons go straight into the LHC from the gas bottle? what is the purpose of the LINAC/booster/SPS etc.? (and what are these things?)

Q. how many protons do you put into the LHC?

Q. do you keep taking protons from the hydrogen bottle and putting them into the LHC all the time?

Acceleration

Q. how do you make protons go faster?

Q. how long does it take to get the protons up to full speed?

Guiding the beam

Q. how do you make some protons go in one direction around the LHC and others go in the other direction?

Safety/protection

Q. What does it mean when we’ve “lost” the beam?

Q. What does it mean to "dump the beam"? And how is this done?

Q) what is this "beam dump" thing I keep hearing about?

Q. what happens if the protons accidentally leave the LHC and go somewhere else?

Collisions

Q. how many bunches of protons are there?

Q. how many protons hit each other when bunches collide?

Q. what happens to the rest of the protons in the bunch?

Q. what if the protons don't collide head-on but just have a "glancing blow" off each other?

Q. if CMS is doing its experiment (having collisions) then what are the other detectors doing at that time?

Q. how difficult is it to make the protons collide?

Miscellaneous

Q. how many people are needed to make the LHC work?
