ALFA Diffractive Analaysis Framework

Design

Data Format

The framework will use D3PD data that contain both ATLAS and ALFA information. It will operate only on ROOT files, so ATHENA support is not needed.

The most important argument has been given by Attila Krasznahorka as an answer to question asked on hn-atlas-pathelp@cernNOSPAMPLEASE.ch (ALFA data xAOD reprocessing):

(...) All in all, any run 1 analysis that you actually want to publish, has to happen using D3PDs. The xAODs with Run 1 data are only meant as a technical exercise. To get ourselves ready for run 2. No public result will ever be allowed to be made from these datasets. (...)

Part of the run1 data is already available in D3PD format. There is support form minimum bias D3PD maker team to produce more data. This is the easiest and fastest way to start ALFA diffractive analysis.

Technical Realisation

Shall it be ROOT standalone package or part of RootCore?

What Shall It Provide

  1. A set of good tracks
  2. Track matching between detectors
  3. Number of reconstructed protons
  4. Protons four-momenta

Implementation

Prerequisites

Data

  1. The framework shall use TrackingData tree.

Rafal

  • it would be good to have parts of common code for elastic and diffractive analyses
  • parts of code that shall be common:
    • lumiblock selection
    • track selection based on quality
    • alignment
    • detector edge cuts
    • kinematic reconstruction
  • it would be good to have user-friendly interface
  • elastic analyses use ALFA ntuples while diffractive D3PDs, probably an interface class is needed in order to create common code
  • elastic analysis use several trees at once, so the framework should be prepared for it

Currently Used Tools and Code
