Operation mode for Detector Operation team

A RunCoordination body, chaired by the Run Coordinator, meets daily to co-ordinate the operation of the experiment. It should include all the necessary experts (see RunCoordination for details) to be able to take informed and correct decisions about the running of the experiment, and to identify problems and issues that need to be discussed and followed up outside the Run Coordination meetings (for example by the TCn, by the management, by the trigger experts, etc).

During beam periods, this group will meet every day at Point 1 to discuss the data taking over the previous 24 hours (problems, etc.) and decide the programme for the following 24 hours. This is a model well established in past and present experiments.

We stress that, although the daily responsibility for the detector operation and data taking is with the Run Coordinator, the latter cannot decide alone the data-taking programme (e.g. to change the threshold of a given trigger or to collect special data), since this requires the input and agreement of the various experiment activities (e.g. of the Physics Coordinator). This is achieved through the RunCoordination body described.

Furthermore, since ultimately the formal responsibilities for the OperationModelDetectorOperation rests with the TC, the detailed responsibilities of the Run-Coordinators with respect to procedures and technical decisions must be delegated from the TC. This means also than the TC have a special direct responsibility for appointment and receiving reports about the run operation.

Several models for central shifts can be considered but it is premature to decide now. One model would be to have three central shifters covering DAQ, DCS/safety, and Monitoring/QA. In addition system shifts can be considered as needed. Another model would be to have around 5 persons covering DAQ/DCS, Common Systems and safety, ID, CALO, Muons. More models are possible to consider but it seems reasonable to assume that we will have 3-5 people on shift (at least). These shifts are supposed to shared equally among the institutes but in particular for DAQ and DCS/safety system expertise a larger pool of experts will be needed very soon.
