A page listing issues with the elog logbook service and their resolutions

5 Nov 2013

  • What: cmslogbook.cern.ch web service not available
  • Why: elogd refused to start, saying that the "elogd dead but subsys locked". Looking into /var/log/messages one could see that the .pwd file (XML) was in a bad format.
  • Resolution:
    • Fix the format of the .pwd file (remove an empty block)
    • remove the /var/lock/subsys/elogd lock file
    • "/etc/init.d/elogd restart" the service

empty block generated

   <email_notify>
     </>
   </email_notify>

contacted the user of this block, he said that he subscribed / unsubscribed the day before to a logbook, but the problem only appeared a day later, not clear how this happened

asked stefan ritt - answer:

this happens very seldom, but we had it also once or twice. For some unknown reason the password file gets corrupted, and you have to manually edit it to fix it. I could so far not relate this to any specific user operation, so it's hard to fix it since I cannot reproduce this problem.
