Introduction to Latex Course, UoM 2009

This site hosts material used for the introduction to latex course for Honours/MSc students given at The University of Melbourne.

Exercises

  • Log in
  • Press ALT + F2, enter gnome-terminal
  • Create a working directory: mkdir latex
  • Change your current working directory: cd latex
  • Create an empty file for editing: touch exercise.tex
  • Open the file for editing: xemacs exercise.tex & (Feel free to use your favourite editor!)
  • Write your document!
  • Compile your latex document: latex exercise.tex
  • Preview it: evince exercise.dvi
  • Once you're finished, convert it either into ps or pdf: dvipdf exercise.dvi exercise.pdf or dvips exercise.dvi exercise.ps

  • Error handling: If an error is encountered, type one of the following letters to continue:
    • x stops immediately and exits the compilation
    • ENTER ignores the current error and carries on
    • r carries on, in case of errors does not stop anymore
    • q carries on quietly as best as possible
    • h tries to give you more help
    • i (followed by a correction) inputs a temporary correction and carries on
