Plan for Electroweak Papers 2010-2011

Gautier Hamel de Monchenault, Michael Schmitt, Juan Alcaraz

The papers are listed chronologically (earliest papers first, latest papers last). The titles are informal - real titles would be assigned later.

Note:

  • pT refers to the lepton
  • qT refers to the boson
  • σ0 refers to the inclusive cross section for that given leptonic channel (i.e., the BR is implied, for this page)

Production of W Bosons at 7 TeV

  • This is the first electroweak paper.
  • As soon as we accumulate a few hundred candidate events in the electron and muon channels, we publish.
  • There should not be separate electron and muon papers - try hard to include both.
  • This paper should be fast - aim for summer conferences if we get the data.
  • Show the MT distributions, and estimates of the QCD background.
  • Show lepton reconstruction and MET measurement in CMS.
  • Measurements:
    1. the total cross section unless we don't know the integrated luminosity.
    2. normalized pT distribution, i.e., (1/σ0)⋅(dσ/dpT)
      • pT refers to the lepton
      • background-subtracted
      • do we want to unsmear this? It is probably fairly easy...

Study of W and Z Boson Production at 7 TeV

  • Second electroweak paper - soon but not rushed.
  • Goal is to show that we can do accurate measurements of inclusive cross sections.
  • This paper will report both electron and muon results.
  • Ask for a few thousand W candidates and a few hundred Z candidates, in both electron and muon channels.
  • Showcase our best methods for lepton reconstruction, efficiency and background estimations, etc.
  • This paper should serve as a reference for other lepton-based measurements (top group, V+jets, etc.)
  • measurements:
    • inclusive W cross section, including acceptance correction (reported explicitly)
    • inclusive Z cross section, for appropriate mass window, including correction for photon exchange
    • ratio of W+ and W− cross sections
    • ratio of W and Z cross sections

Measurement of the W-boson charge asymmetry

  • Based on final 2010 event sample (perhaps including two different c.m. energies)
  • lepton charge asymmetry based on pseudo-rapidity
  • both electrons and muons, if possible (including combined measurements)
  • comparison to modern PDFs

Drell-Yan Cross Section Measurement (dσ/dM)

  • final 2010 event sample
  • both electrons and muons
  • from about 15 GeV up as far as the sample goes
  • perhaps show the unfolded distribution - a careful analysis of the mass resolution, etc.
  • can we do anything for PDFs?

Transverse Momentum (qT) distribution of Z bosons

  • final 2010 event sample
  • unfolded distribution
  • test and tune theoretical models for the low-qT range
  • test pQCD at high qT

Reconstruction of the Z→ττ channel

  • final 2010 event sample
  • lepton + hadronic tau channel (maybe di-lepton too?)
  • main point is to show the quality of the signal

Basic Measurement of V+Jet Rates

  • final or almost-final 2010 event sample
  • prefer both W and Z signals in one paper
  • goal is to show the rate of jet production in association with a W and/or Z
  • detailed jet studies come later
  • inclusive jet counting, ie, ≥Nj jets
  • measurements:
    • dσ/dNj for W+jets and Z+jets
    • normalized: (1/σ0) dσ/dNj where σ0 is the total inclusive cross section
    • quantitative comparison of W and Z
    • It would be nice to include b-tagging

Measurement of the Forward-Backward Asymmetry of Lepton Pairs

  • final 2010 event sample
  • unfolded AFB as a function of di-lepton mass
  • must use longitudinally-boosted Zs to determine the spin axis. Electrons only?
  • We could extract a value for sin²θW but it will be for show only

Observation of W-γ and Z-γ final states in proton-proton collisions at √s =7 TeV

  • final 2010 sample
  • electrons and muons together
  • place constraints on anomalous couplings

Observation of WW, WZ and ZZ final states in proton-proton collisions at √s =7 TeV

  • final 2010 sample
  • electrons and muons together
  • place constraints on anomalous couplings

Detailed Study of V+Jets

  • final 2010 event sample
  • prefer both W and Z signals in one paper
  • goal is to present corrected differential jet distributions
  • inclusive jet counting, ie, ≥Nj jets
  • measurements, probably normalized to σ0
    • dσ/dET for each jet
    • dσ/dRjj (jet separation)
    • dσ/dMjj (di-jet mass)
    • dσ/dΔη (separation Δη between two leading jets)

Study of WZ, and ZZ final states in the di-jet mode

  • final 2010 event sample
  • one Z decays leptonically, the other weak boson decays to a jet pair
  • we will include WW if it can be done.

First Measurement of the W Mass and Width with the CMS Detector

  • final 2010 event sample
  • will not be competitive with Tevatron measurements
  • goal is to show that we can make a first measurement, and to set the ground for the future
