Medipix3

Features

  • High spatial, high contrast CMOS pixel readout chip
  • Pixel readout: mitigates charge-sharing effect by allocation to the highest collecting charge pixel
  • Single photon counting mode (noise suppresion, superior SNR)
  • Direct X-ray conversion
  • accepts +/- charge
  • 2 thresholds, 2 12-bit counters per pixel
  • 2 modes of operation: single pixel mode, charge summing mode (in either 55μm pixel configuration or in spectroscopic mode)
  • simultaneous (continuous) read/write mode: 1 counter reads out, 1 counter counts (no deadtime) - not in conjunction with spectroscopic mode
  • sequential read/write mode: 2 different thresholds
  • spectroscopic mode: bonding of 1 chip to 4 pixels linked (110μm sensor matrix) providing larger pixels with 8 independent threshold levels and 8 counters
  • noise per pixel: ~60e- RMS (single pixel mode)
  • noise per pixel: ~130e- RMS (charge summing mode)
  • more radiation-hard than Medipix2, due to CMOS technology

Parameters

  • pixel size: 55μm
  • CMOS technology: 0.13μm
  • count rate per pixel: 300KHz
  • active area: 2cm^2
  • 256x256 pixel matrix

Applications (projected)

  • Multi-spectral X-ray imaging
  • synchrotron light sources
  • able to operate in any application that currently employs Medipix2
  • CT scanners
