SRF TEST INFRASTRUCTURE MEETING on 17 March 2008

Participants

Olivier Brunner, Sergio Calatroni, Pierre Maesen, Bruno Vullierme, Wolfgang Weingarten (chair)

Agenda

  • validating the processing and test installations at CERN with spare cavities for the LHC
  • preparing the refurbishment at SM18 and elsewhere (cryogenics, quadrupole resonator, TE011 cavity, 1500 MHz cavities, diagnostics, etc.)

Minutes (rev.)

WW presented the status of the bid to the EU inside EuCard (attached), which provides the frame for the European Infrastructure for R&D and testing superconducting cavities and cryomodules (called: SRF test infrastructure).

If approved, the financing by the EU will not be available before 2009. However, already in 2008, the management of AB department agreed to the proposal (attached) to finance up till three spare cavities for the LHC. These would make up, in addition to the already existing cavity #21, the cavities (including He tank) needed for a second spare LHC cryo-module.

An informal offer by ACCEL company amounts to 60 kEuros per complete cavity, He tank and coating not included. ACCEL kept the necessary tools and rigs for manufacturing the cavities and is also in a position to do the sputter-coating (with CERN’s magnetron rig) and assembling of the helium tank. It was decided to manufacture the cavities outside CERN - also for the simple reason that some equipment such as the EB welder with the internal gun is no longer available at CERN. However the coating shall be done at CERN (to try out, for instance, the high power sputter coating). For this reason the magnetron rig must be repatriated (action: Sergio C.).

The cost table as shown in the proposal was presented. All participants in the meeting were asked to refine the cost estimation (action: all).

Regarding the planning for the refurbishment of the cryogenics WW had contacted L. Tavian, the group leader of AT-CRG. He agreed that Bruno V. will be our contact. He also said that posts for draftsmen in AT were not yet filled. Bruno V. will look into how to organize the design work for the refurbishment of the cryo-lines (action: Bruno V.).

The first refurbishment stage should aim at reducing the losses in the fix cryolines but leave the operation mode of the cryostats as they are now (no close cycle operation at 2 K). It should nonetheless be compatible with close cycle operation at 2 K for all horizontal cryo-modules envisaged in a second refurbishment stage. The requirement and in particular the interface between AT-CRG and AB-RF shall be defined in more detail (action: Bruno V. and Pierre M.).

As to the utilisation of the four vertical pits V3 – V6, the missing cryostat for V3 was recovered from INFN Genova. A first vacuum test showed no leak. We have now four cryostats avaialble with inner diameter of 1.1 m, two of them (V3 and V4) with a useful depth of 1.5 m, the other two (V5 and V6) with a useful depth of 3 m, and 5 covers are at our disposition. The attribution of the pits to the program was decided as such:

V3-> not yet specified, V4 -> quadrupole resonator (400 MHz), V5 –> REX - Isolde; V6 -> SOLEIL (350 MHz), LHC (400 MHz).

The quadrupole resonator will be used to optimize the sputtering parameter for REX-ISOLDE cavities, to be tested during a period between fall 2008 and summer 2009. The cryostat in pit V3 will be used for these tests. The resonator, being mounted on a cover fitting into a smaller cryostat, has to be adapted though to the cover for V3 (action: Wolfgang W.).

The proposed testing of several 1500 MHz cavities was abandoned, because of lacking resources.

The proposed design work for a TE011 type cavity was not yet addressed.

It was agreed that Moday afternoon is a convenient time to hold the "SRF test infrastructure" meeting.

Next meeting

The next meeting is planned on 7 April 2008, B. 892-1-B09, 15h30.
