Luminosity Exercise for the ATLAS DESY NAF and FDR Tutorial
Installing LumiBlockComps package
In order to get the correct database (DB) for the FDR1 data, you have to work in release 14.1.0 with the latest tag for the LumiBlockComps package.
Follow the instructions to get it installed at the NAF:
cd atlas/testarea
mkdir 14.1.0
cd 14.1.0
source ~/cmthome/setup.sh -tag=14.1.0
Either check out the package from CERN
kinit -4 usernameCERN@CERN.CH
cmt co -r LumiBlockComps-00-00-16 LumiBlock/LumiBlockComps
or get the package from my public directory:
cp -a ~efeld/public/lumi/LumiBlock .
Now, compile the package:
cd LumiBlock/LumiBlockComps/cmt
cmt config
gmake
I got already hold of one of the FDR1 reprocessed AODs and stored it at the NAF. For easy use, create a link in the run directory of this package:
cd ../run
ln -s /scratch/current/atlas/efeld/fdr/fdr08_run1.0003070.StreamEgamma.merge.AOD.o1_r24_t3._0001.1
Please, check if the script is already seen by your shell:
which LumiCalc.py
should list your testarea for the path to LumiCalc.py. If it doesn't, try
rehash
and test again.
Now, you are ready to test the
LumiCalc.py
script.
LumiCalc.py
First we check what LumiCalc.py can do for us. As every good script it has a help option:
LumiCalc.py -h
LumiCalc.py can be either run on an AOD and then the run numbers and lumi blocks are read from the AOD or the run numbers can be given explicitly.
In the later case no AOD is needed. In addition there are a lot of parameters to choose databases. If you run at CERN, you only need the
--mc
option to FDR data.
If you are working from a kit you also need
--readoracle
. For more details see

Running the LumiCalc.py script on an AOD
When Lumicalc.py is called with an AOD file and nothing in addition, it will print the available trigger items from the used menus:
LumiCalc.py --readoracle --mc fdr08_run1.0003070.StreamEgamma.merge.AOD.o1_r24_t3._0001.1

What is the integrated luminosity? It should be 13.94 nb^-1 for this example.
How about this one?

Can you see the difference in the number of accepted events at the different trigger levels?
The integrated luminosity is still the same: 13.94 nb^-1

What happend to the integrated luminosity?
Running the LumiCalc.py script with run numbers
If you are sure you have all the data from a certain run number or you just want to do some checks on the luminosity,
you can use LumiCalc.py with a single run number or a range of run numbers.
Lets do the examples again:
LumiCalc.py --readoracle --mc --trigger=L1_EM18 --r=3070
Well, the integrated luminosity is 29.23 nb^-1. Looks like we have lost some lumi blocks in our AOD or in the stream or there is still some bug in the script.
The lumi block range is 0-4294967294.
You can also get the luminosity for all triggers in a run, but this takes long:
