With this the SCT community now expects that regular information will be provided for distribution. As an interim solution, we proposet that monthly reports/updates from each institute/group should be sent to one of the convenors (Y. Unno (unno@kekvax.kek.jp)), and the convenors will then compose a compilation of this information into a MODULE NEWSLETTER on the module web page. Nobu and Tony. _______________________________________________________________________________ THE SCT MODULES PROGRAMME FOR 1997-1998 ACTIONS DRAFTED FROM THE SCT MEETING at CERN 27th MAY 1997 * Some activities in the SCT modules programme were reviewed with presentations: (i) Forward module report : Tim Jones (ii) Melbourne forward module : Geoff Taylor (iii) The Barrel TDR module overview : Nobu Unno (iv) Geneva module experience : Bertrand Vuaridel * It was agreed that both barrel and forward module designs should be optimised now to form the basis of remaining 1997 module construction. The forward community will meet at CERN 29th May with this intention, and the Barrel collaboration will also work to a time schedule of a few weeks to establish final drawings. * The following target dates were agreed : (i) Thermal : profile and distortion measurments by end August 1997 (ii) Multiple module operation : by end of 1997 * The proposed construction centres are already preparing programmes of dummy, mechanical, thermal and electrical module construction. The following table provides a draft list of institutes who are potential sources of individual items. It was agreed that small numbers of modules to current designs would be made as soon as possible with existing chip sets, but that emphasis would be placed on ATLAS final prototypes that would be made towards the end of 1997 using final chips. For interim modules the UK-B and UK-F would use LBIC+CDP, and Oslo/CERN/Geneva and KEK/UCSC would use SCT128B. Other institutes were encouraged by O/C/G to participate in the currently CERN-based SCT128B activities. * The following table gives the indicative numbers of electrical modules for 1997 production that are aimed at with FINAL FE chips, if current delivery schedules for successful devices are maintained. Geneva 2 This sums to 14+ modules, but the overall target for the total module production, including current and future chips sets and detectors is estimated to be significantly larger, with a grand total of around 26. * The updated summary of module component items was : (a) Detectors : Forward : 30+30 available to UK-F from HAMA end of July 1997 Barrel : ~100 available to KEK+UK-B from HAMA ~40 to Oslo from SINTEF, during July 1997 ~25 to Geneve from CSEM (date ?) (b) Front-end chips (with dates for hybrid availability): CAFE-M up to possibly ~100 by end Sept 1997 ABC (from up to 5 wafers) possibly ~200 by end Sept 1997 ABCD up to possibly ~400 by end Oct 1997 For currently available chips:[4 HAC+30 LBIC+15 CDP] for current UK-B + UK-F construction have been requested from UCSC, [SCT128B] expect ~100 during June to be available, initially at CERN. (c) Hybrids:[type] Forward: for CAFE-M+ABC( around 12?) and for ABCD(?), in BeO, by mid Aug 1997 via Livp'l Barrel: for CAFE-M+ABC, LBL "diagnostic" hybrid(BeO),(no USA representation at meeting!) request from others for summer delivery: UK-B(5),Melbourne(3),KEK(3), +1 extra, giving total request for 12. **** All institutes would prefer to have access to stripped down non-diagnostic version if possible **** Barrel: for ABCD, Oslo version by end of JUNE 1997(BeO)(number?) and will be compatible/liaised with KEK for kapton version Barrel: for SCT128B, alumina(3umAu) making 10, + BeO making 20 (d) Low mass cabling : prototype cables(back-to-back) double-layered with 1mm pitch lines and two 20 pin connectors per double-layer by mid Sept 1997 there will be 50 in 1.5m lengths. [Need for liaison between Ljubljana and hybrid designers to ensure compatibility] (e) Data link : [opto board + DORIC+ fibre], up to 6 sets planned to be available for end of 1997. Requested to provide at least 12 sets by end of Jan 1998. (f) Power supplies : For final ATLAS chip sets: Cracow already have some HV prototype units, and Prague have designs of LV units underway. Requested to liaise combined HV+LV tests asap and to provide a minimum system by end 1997 for mutliple modules tests(for up to ~10 modules) (g) Back-end and DAQ system : ** Urgent ** need for detailed specification for multi-module systems tests(H8 system stated to be too costly and cumbersome for use elsewhere). PC+VME system from UCSC development appears good choice for individual module tests, but for detailed studies of say 12 modules in lab for noise and performance evaluation no current scheme is believed to be appropriate. * MODULE programme goals Please comment on and amend the estimates of module components and draft plans in this note. On WEDNESDAY 11th June we propose to issue the corrected version of this note. We should then have an agreed module construction plan for the rest of this year, that we propose should be monitored by the whole SCT community. We will request, and distribute, regular updates on the project status from all the institutes, with the aim of having : * an update of the module performance choices [ie barrel centre-tap and forward end-tap] at the September ATLAS plenary, and * an initial multi-module test (at CERN?) by the end of 1997 of available ATLAS final prototype modules. The goals associated with these module construction plans are clearly ambitious, and with an extremely tight time schedule. If the community agrees to try and achieve these targets we believe there will have to be very close liaison and collaboration between all those involved, particularly in the next few months. If the SCT endorses this draft plan we would be willing to organise the necessary interactions with and between all the groups in the component-item lists given in the tables to try to achieve the objectives.
