I have a few comments on slide 10:

The summary of items is good.   Here is the status on each.

- Update the code to work with the Run-3 CMSSW release
Done
This has been done.  I used a 12_0_X series release and successfully ran on data and validation MC. Neither is really a high statistics test but the code runs on data (and doesn’t really find anything) and fills the ntuple in the MC.

– Analyze “LCT found and segment failed” cases
Done - no simple way to recover inefficiency
This has been done but the results did not reveille any obvious improvements.   There are small inefficiencies in the segment building algorithms that can be improved by loosening cuts or may be found by the other algorithms but you have to loosen cuts enough that it would probably not be advisable.   At least the RU authors were against it and I agree with their arguments.   I wasn’t planning on working on this further unless something important is seen in the Run 3 data.


– Compare with simulation (Z→μμMC)
Done with Run 2 MC - to be repeated with Run MC for comparison to Run 3 data results
I have done this for Run 2 MC.   The results were as expected for segments and showed an odd inefficiency for LCTs.   In interacted with Sven about this but we were not able to come to a conclusion before he left.   He thinks it will likely not occur in the Run 3 MC since many things have been changed.   I should retest this when there is easy to access high statistics Run 3 Z->mumu MCs available.

1. GEMs: check the geometry (esp. for the 10x10 custom GEMs) and replace the current "toy" digitiaztion with a more realistic one. This is not necessarily in the critical path at the moment, but I suppose it matches well your expertise and interest.

Current digitizer assumes a trapazoidal chamber and then computes hit positions by addinga radom 2 (narrow or with lower probability wide) Gaussian offset based on the pitch between readout elements.
That's not actaully that bad looking over some GEM performance results.
A more realistic model would invlove efficiency, noise and clustering as in

Efficiency and revisiting resolutions choices might make sense.


2. Import a more realistic geometry for pixel and detailed digitization/clusterization. This is more critical since the emittance measurement critically depends on the track reconstruction accuracy; also we expect the 2 mu tracks to be very close in the first two pixel layers after the target, so that in a fraction of events, clusters will overlap. Although reconstruction could possibly handle "merged" clusters in the first layer to mitigate this effect, we need to model the resulting inefficiency.
The silicon digitizer only calls a random numbers with a wide and narrow distribution.

A more realistic model would, drift the charge in the magnetic field and add a random offset over seveeral sampling points. Map that to pixel points and then cluster the result

However, the CMS pixel resolution follow pretty well a student T distribution.
My feeling is that a simple digitization than used the angle of incidence to determine the hit pixels and determine when there are overlaps between clusters would be suffcient.
I'm not sure I agree that we need the full CMS derived simulation but would be intereseted to see what they did.

This tasks requires interacting with the Chromie experts, who already have simulation and reconstruction in place (we are in contact but did not start looking at their code, which is CMS-derived, yet).

3. Acceptance studies: For the cross-section measurement, we need to take into account the acceptance of detectors after the target, for mumu events generated by positrons within the acceptance of upstream pixels. In principle that acceptance should be ~1 if detectors are placed correctly and, possibly, if we apply fiducial cuts on the incoming positron track (eg to limit its divergence and restrict its impact point).

It would be useful to check the distribution of muon hit positions in the different detector planes and the fraction ending in their acceptance. Also, the background occupancy due ee pairs produced in the target, hits from tails of the spent beam, etc (obviously backgrounds from interaction of the beam with supports, mechanics etc is not present). This work can start right away, with the current simulation (possibly playing with beam divergence and energy spread, etc).

This I have already looked into and tried to get Susmita started on.

4. common fit: to get the best possible track parameters for the emittance measurement, a common vertex fit of the e+mu+mu- tracks should be implemented. A simple approximate constraint was used in the past test-beam given that we had very poor resolution silicons. A full 3D fit to a common vertex with proper handling of uncertainties would better exploit the accuracy of the new pixels. It can be implemented as a standalone fit assuming straight trajectories using only the pixel hits from positrons and muons in dimuon events (neglecting backgrounds for the time being, and also assuming muons have already been identified) so that we can better understand what improvement we can eventually achieve, the effect/bias due to hit uncertainty assignment, etc.
(For this, the signal filter we have been discussing will help getting a decent number of mumu events; Stefano has implemented it but he is still doing some test before committing it)

I've worked on track fits before so could help with this.

5. Comparison of event generators (Whizard, Babayaga) and GEANT, in terms of predicted cross-section, kinematic distributions, etc. According to the documentation, GEANT includes LO mumu production including SSS enhancement [1]. The Babayaga generator, for example, generates mumu at NLO but does not include SSS according to the author. Moreover, the actual sqrt(s) of the interaction will depend on the energy lost by the positron in the target before interaction, which makes it complicate to plug in externally generated events. Leaving the generation to GEANT would be much easier but we have to understand e.g. if any kind of reweighting is needed.
This would be interesting because it involves physics. If there was really an interest in externally genearatted events we would probably have to make a standalone program to simulate the effect of the target.


6. What we really need to set up are end-to end draft strategies for the x-section and emittance analysis; this would be important even based on very approximate simulation and reconstruction before we refine e.g. digitization, details of the geometry, full reconstruction etc.
